Violence and Aggression in the work place.

As professionals concerned with the safety and well-being of all employees, we believe it is important to recognise the serious issue of work-related violence and aggression. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines work-related violence as any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances related to their work. This can occur in a variety of sectors and can include verbal abuse or threats as well as physical attacks.
The HSE has recently published updated guidance to help employers protect their staff from work-related violence and aggression. The guidance highlights employers' legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. It also provides practical advice on how to prevent or reduce the risk of violence and aggression in the workplace.
Some of the key topics covered in the guidance include identifying hazards and assessing risks, implementing control measures, reporting and recording incidents, developing policies and procedures, and involving workers and their representatives in managing work-related violence and aggression. In addition, specific information is provided for sectors that are more prone to work-related violence and aggression.
It is important to note that work-related violence and aggression can have serious consequences for the health, safety and well-being of workers, as well as for the reputation, productivity and costs of employers. It is therefore imperative that employers take proactive steps to prevent or minimise the risk of work-related violence and aggression, and to provide support for employees who are affected.
As a professional organisation we strongly encourage all employers to take the necessary steps to protect their employees and ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
