Slip Testing

Slip Testing:

Slip testing is a way of checking how well the floors in your workplace prevent slipping when they are wet, dry, dirty, or contaminated. Slipping can cause serious injuries to your workers and visitors, as well as legal problems and impact the reputation of your business.

Did you know in 2021-2022 there where 626,713 work-related injuries in the UK alone; 30% of these occurred due to slips, trips and falls in the workplace. This resulted on average 10.6 days lost per year per person.

The UK laws and standards for slip testing are based on the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which requires that you protect the health and safety of everyone in your workplace as much as possible. This means that you have to identify and control the slip and trip hazards, which are the most common cause of major injuries at work. You also have to follow the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which requires that you have to assess the risks (including slip and trip risks) and act where needed. In addition, you have to comply with the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which requires that your floors must be suitable, in good condition and free from obstacles, and that people should be able to move around safely.

There are different means and standards for slip testing your floors, depending on what kind of floors you have, how you use them, and what kind of substances they might come in contact with. One of the most common and recommended ways is the pendulum test, which mimics the action of a slipping heel on a floor. The pendulum test is a device that you can use to measure the slip resistance of your floors under dry and wet conditions, as well as with different types of contamination.

Slip testing is an essential part of ensuring the safety and quality of your floors, as well as following the UK laws and standards. By doing slip testing, you can reduce the chance of slip and trip accidents, which can harm your workers, visitors, and business. Slip testing can also help you to choose the best and most cost-effective floors for your workplace, and to keep them in good shape.
